Public Gets First Glance
at New Bridge Proposals
It is a hot topic in Winneconne right now – the bridge over the Wolf River and what will become of it as the DOT prepares to build new or refurbish the existing in approximately 2015. Members of the Wisconsin DOT hosted a meeting last week to show residents the alternatives proposed for the bridge and gain feedback on which ones should be discarded.
The DOT and Winneconne stakeholders have six proposed bridge options that are seemingly feasible for the long term. Two of the six options involve moving the bridge north or south a full block, utilizing Riverview Drive and Meadow Lane. Other options are moving the bridge just south or just north of the existing bridge, and the final two would keep the bridge in its current location. None of the options will have zero impact on property owners in the immediate vicinity, but some could minimalize the impact.
This meeting was the first of many the DOT will hold to ultimately decide the fate of Winneconne’s only bridge. Of the crowd of 100-plus people at the meeting the general consensus was “A new bridge, a high fixed one, could wipe our town.” Obviously property owners who could be affected are concerned and very cautious about the developments and their impact on them personally. However, the DOT tried to dispel concerns and remind people that those decisions are a very long way off.
The DOT expects that it will be the end of 2011 before a decision is made on which bridge option will be selected. The current bridge is 76 years old. Community members interested in learning more about this project and sharing their ideas can contact the village hall for a public comment form and other information.
