Fun Alert! Sovereign State Days is Rollin’ Into Town
Annual festival is bringing on the fun with 2010 theme – Rollin’ Down the River
Winneconne and Sovereign State go together like, say, beer and brats, or fries and a coke. Summer in Winneconne just isn’t summer unless you include the annual Sovereign State Days festival. Set for July 16 through 18, the 43rd annual event is sure to bring with it good times and a line-up of great activities. The 2010 theme is a great one, too – Rollin’ Down the River.
The Sovereign State Committee chose “Rollin’ Down the River” as this year’s theme to celebrate Winneconne’s history as a logging community back in the day. “This theme kind of plays on the Tom Sawyer era,” said committee member Jaci Stelzner. The committee is happy to have a new event for 2010 – a lumberjack tournament will take place on Saturday. “There will be no entertainment tent (at the park), just roaming people – a mime, the clown, things like that,” added Stelzner.
Activities kick off on Friday with a street dance from 8 p.m. to midnight at Waterfront Park with music from the ever-popular Boogie and the Yo Yoz and fireworks at dusk.
The Sovereign State Days legendary parade will lead festivities on Saturday morning and will include the Parade of Thunder motorcycle poker run. The procession continues west on Main Street as folks pile into Marble Park where any number of events may be enjoyed. Look for the following:
-Super blow-up slide
-Model car races
-Clowns
-Horse and carriage rides
-Dunk tank
-Volleyball and baseball tournaments
-Firemen’s water fights
-Craft and flea market
-Historical Society Museum Complex buildings open from noon to 4 p.m.
-Lumberjack competition (new event)
Topping things off, Chasin Mason will perform at Waterfront Park Saturday night from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Sunday’s line-up continues with events at Marble Park:
-Pancake breakfast
-Kids fishing contest
-Bingo
-Historical Society Museum Complex buildings open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
-4th annual tractor pull
Plus, to get across the bridge Sunday morning you’ll need a buck. Yes, that’s right, there will be a $1 fee to cross the bridge until noon. So, pull out your Winneconne gear and get ready for some Sovereign State Days fun. And remember, “We like it where?”
