New Summer Rec. Class

Sails in to Winneconne

Summer break has just gotten a little more exciting for area children. Sailing is slated to join the roster of summer activities through the Winneconne park and recreation program. The idea was pitched to the parks department earlier this spring and it thought it would be a great addition to the program.

A variety of vessels will be on-hand for middle school aged youth to try – windsurfers, O’pen BIC’s, and Harpoon daysailors. They will get an introduction to sailing, rig the boats and try windsurfing on land to get the feel before trying open water. There will also be video clips available for instruction. Experienced youth sailors will be there to demonstrate and share some ‘tricks of the trade.’ Demonstrators will also share some of the goofy stuff like creative capsize and acrobatic dismounts.

A demonstration of the program was held last week for sixth graders. They trekked to Lake Winneconne Park (county park) last week Tuesday afternoon for some orientation and a taste of what the program has to offer for summer fun and learning something new.

The program will be offered to middle school students and is tentatively set for Friday afternoons. Gear, including wetsuits, life jackets and windsurfing gear will be provided. Watch for more information in the coming weeks through the middle school or parks department.
